St. Augustine Beach April 2007

THE TRIP
It's hard to believe our vacation has come and gone and I am sitting here updating our blog. Last week we went to St. Augustine Beach. We had a great time despite the trip starting out a bit rocky. Rourk and I decided we'd drive at night. You know, the kids would sleep and we'd make good time and enjoy the peace. So, last Friday we packed the van and left the house around 6pm. Our first stop at around 6:45pm was a break at McDonald's in Simpsonville. This is just south of Greenville. Honestly...you can't even count this as getting out of town. It takes us 45 minutes to eat and get everyone back into the van. We're feeling good. Ryan is watching Blues Clues and Lilly is quiet. Fast foward to 10pm. We are in Columbia, South Carolina. In FOUR hours we have only traveled a little over 100 miles. We have stopped for Lilly 3 times. The third time was a charm and she ate and went sound asleep. Ryan is hanging in there and happily watching Blues Clues. Rourk and I are feeling a bit haggard and are definitely second guessing our decision to drive at night. Can we make it to Savannah? That becomes our goal. We finally get there at around 1am.

We get up the next morning feeling much better and after a good breakfast we are ready to tackle the remainder of the trip. We estimate that we are still 3-4 hours from St. Augustine. That includes frequent stops for the kids.

THE ARRIVAL
We make it to St. Augustine Beach around 2:30pm. The condo is perfect (shoot, it could have been a barn and we'd have been happy to see it). It is directly on the beach and has an awesome view. We unpack, rest for a little while, coat everyone with sunscreen and head to the beach. Ryan loves it and Lilly tolerates it. Rourk and I are just happy to be there.
