I think about Lilly, my relationship with her and the bond between mothers and daughters often, but from time to time it dawns on me that Rourk has a daughter too. This dawning occurred just a few days ago. Ryan was in his room sleeping. I was returning e-mail and Rourk and Lilly were playing in the den. My guess was that he was down on the floor throwing her up in the air or something just as exciting because she was giggling deep from her tummy. The sound filled the house and I couldn't help but pause and take a moment to smile at them. It was also difficult to keep from going into the den and interrupting their time. I wanted to make Lilly laugh too.
I stayed at the computer because I found that I was enjoying listening to them. I also know that I get to spend far more time with Lilly than Rourk and he needs that uninterrupted time with her. There are many gifts I can give my daughter, but taking a step back and allowing Rourk to nurture an enduring relationship with her is one that I must give selflessly. And besides, there is nothing wrong with being a Daddy's Girl.
