Special Olympics Young Athletes
Young Athletes™ is an innovative sports play program for children with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility at age 8. The pilot has been implemented thanks to the generous support of the Mattel Children's Foundation.The Young Athletes program strengthens physical development and self-esteem for children ages 2 through 7 by building skills for future sports participation and socialization. Family members and caregivers also are encouraged to become involved as the child learns success through physical activity.
Ryan's school, The Meyer Center for Special Children, has started this program and he will participate there.
We have also registered him for the Young Athletes gymnastics program at Foothills Gymnastics and Dance in Easley. If you live in the area and are interested in gymnastics for your child please contact them. I have spoken with the coach several times in the past few weeks and I have been very impressed with her knowledge and enthusiasm.
I can't wait to tell you all about it. He starts on the 18th.

Hi Marcy, I finally found your blog through Anne's again - Thanks for the info on the SO and the gymnastics. Being out of school I have lost touch with most everyone and everything this week. :(

This sounds great. I hope Ryan enjoys it, and I look forward to hearing more about it. Might be something we look into for Evan next year, when he's a little bit older and a little more cooperative (I hope!).
That's great Marcy. I heard a few years back it was starting through my SO person @ Dorman. Spencer is also doing it through his school. He is practicing swimming and bowling! It is so cool, gets them ready for the big stuff. Maybe sometime you and Ryan can come watch my students participate in a sport! ~~Denise

Hey there- just thought I'd say that Josh goes to Foothills gymnastics, and his teacher (who he *loved* last year was Penny, who I think is the SO coach. She is awesome and Josh misses having her. If we're heading over there the same days, we should carpool!
