Broken heart.

Sergeant's heart is broken. Sargent is our 14 year old Miniature Schnauzer. I have known for several months that his health has been rapidly declining. He sleeps more hours than he is awake and looks like he doesn't feel good--he just looks weary most days. His back legs also shake when he stands and he often has trouble climbing steps. It has been difficult to watch this decline so this past Friday Rourk took him to see the veterinarian, one that specializes in geriatric pets. She did an exam and shared with Rourk that the shaking is only a minor concern because Sergent most likely has mitral valvular endocardiosis, fancy words that mean his heart is giving out on him. It probably goes without saying that his prognosis is poor.

I know his time with us is now limited, but for all of you that are thinking he's just a dog I want you to know that he has also been a loyal friend. That dog curled up on the couch with me during those depressing days after my first miscarriage. He kept me company when Rourk was studying day in and day out during dental school. He also got up with me when my babies woke me at 2am. He'd following me down the steps and sit at my feet while I fed them and then he'd find his way back up again after I put them back in the crib. I have always appreciated his intuition, his sensitivity. So Sergeant I am sorry your heart is broken, and I am sure it is only a small consolation that mine is too.

He has been a good dog. It is a sad thing to lose a faithful friend like that. We are so sorry! We feel like we are his grandparents too.

Enjoy your remaining time with him. He'll meet on the other side of the rainbow bridge someday.

I'm really sorry about Sergeant. I know it doesn't help now but my Lady is up there and when the time comes, the two of them will play like puppies together.
